The parliament of Yugoslavia's Montenegro republic elected on Wednesday a new cabinet with former President Milo Djukanovic as the prime minister.

The cabinet, having four deputy prime ministers and 16 ministers, was approved with a majority of votes despite a boycottby opposition deputies.

Deputies of opposition Socialist People's Party, the Liberal Alliance and other two parties who favor closer ties with Serbia walked out of the chamber before the vote.

The Djukanovic-led coalition, made up by his Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), grabbed39 seats in the 75-member parliament in the elections of last October, on a platform of integration into the European Union (EU)and democratic reform.

After the vote, Djukanovic told the deputies that the "new government is determined to continue the policy of peace, multi-ethnic harmony and economic reforms," and would work on "restoringthe institutions of the state of Montenegro."

The new government is installed at a time when the republics ofMontenegro and Serbia are to ratify plans soon for a loose union called "Serbia and Montenegro" to replace the Yugoslav federation. The two republics make up the federation.

Djukanovic and his supporters back independence for Montenegro but have agreed to accept the new union for at least three years under an agreement backed by the EU, which feared independence would trigger off unrest in the already volatile Balkans.

Djukanovic stepped down from presidency last November after being nominated as candidate for the premiership.
