Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi left for Moscow on Thursday morning to sign a document with Russian President Vladimir Putin which they hope will help boost bilateral ties in various fields, including nonpolitical areas.

After paying a three-day visit to the Russian capital, Koizumi will also visit Khabarovsk on Sunday to meet local people before returning to Japan later in the day.

Koizumi will become only the third Japanese premier to pay an official visit to Russia since Tokyo and Moscow normalized diplomatic ties in 1956.

Koizumi and Putin will sign the six-item action plan after the talks that will cover the need to settle a long-standing territorial dispute before signing a post-World War II peace treaty, as well as boosting economic and cultural ties.

After leaving the Russian capital on Saturday evening, Koizumi plans to meet in Khabarovsk on Sunday with Konstantin Pulikovskii, Putin's representative for federal affairs in the Russian Far East who has met Kim several times.

It will be the first time a Japanese premier has visited the Russian Far East region, the officials said.
