China's biggest luxury bus manufacturing base is now up and running in Hefei, capital of east China's
Anhui
province.
The first batch of buses using German technology that includes three luxury models under the Ankai-Setra brand, recently rolled off the production line at the Anhui Ankai-Setra Automotive Plant.
The buses are equipped with engines produced by German-US auto giant Daimler Chrysler,
Zuo Yan'an, board chairman of the Anhui company, said the new plant had the capacity to produce 1,000 buses annually, about half of China's overall production.
The buses sell at prices ranging from 1.5 million yuan (180,000US dollars) to 2.6 million yuan (317,000 US dollars) each.
Ankai began to import sophisticated German bus technology in 1993 and developed its first luxury bus fitted with washrooms and TV and telephone sets.
In 2001, the company signed a 10-year deal with the automotive giant which produces Mercedes Benz and other brand-name vehicles, to import the German company's up-to-date technology and engines.
Experts with the Chinese company said the new buses complied with the European Union's gas emission standard Euro II.
They are capable of meeting vehicle emission requirements set to be introduced in time for the
Beijing
Summer Olympic Games in 2008.
