To ensure consumer safety, Shanghai is putting in place a data system that records the major movements of farm produce, livestock and poultry entering the local market.

After 12 months of setting up, the system now covered more than 400 pig farms each raising over 1,000 pigs, most of the gateways to the city and major vegetable growers, said Dai Ping, a leading official with the Shanghai Agricultural Commission.

It records the detailed information on the number of pigs to be butchered, epidemic diseases, quarantine and death tolls at pig farms, the use of pesticides, and purchase of seeds and their uses by vegetable growers.

According to the commission, the ultimate goal is to hold all information concerning the origin, producer and production process of all agricultural products on Shanghai's market, including every piece of meat and every package of vegetables.

Pan Yingjie, deputy director of the commission, said modern agriculture should be systematically monitored to meet consumers' higher expectations on food safety.
