The China Performing Arts Agency (CPAA), the country's largest national arts agency, will act as ticket seller for next month's 2003 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships (FCFSC).

This was the first time a Chinese arts agency had sold tickets for an international sports competition, sources with both the CPAA and the Sports General Administration of China (SGA) said in Beijing on Thursday.

The FCFSC, the world's top figure skating event, will be held in Beijing from Feb. 12 to 16. Nearly 150 competitors to take partare from 12 countries and regions, including China, the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Africa and Australia. Many world-famous sports stars will compete, including Michelle Kwan of the United States.

CPAA General Manager Zhang Yu said that three marked features distinguished figure skating from other sport events - fitting and fashionable costumes, harmonious and appeasing music, and superb skating skills. It was called the "world's most beautiful sport" for its combination of many artistic factors such as light, expression, music, dance and scene sets.

The CPAA, respected for its promotion of such professional performances as Turandot, has invested hugely in a nation-wide ticketing network. The company will promote a set of tickets whichoffer big discounts compared with individual tickets. The lowest prices for preliminary, final and performance contests will be 40 yuan (4.8 US dollars), 80 yuan (9.6 US dollars) and 120 yuan (14.5U.S. dollars), respectively.

Zhu Yunbin, vice-chairman of China's Skating Association which is sponsoring the competition, said in recent years that Chinese arts agencies had an excellent record in selling tickets. This cooperation between the Chinese sports sphere and the arts agency offered a good practice for the 2008 Olympic Games.
