The withdrawal of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) was effective from Saturday, said a senior DPRK official.

The announcement was made by DPRK Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sunin a letter sent to the president of the United Nations Security Council.

Pyongyang declared its withdrawal from the NPT on Friday, but made it clear that Pyongyang had no intention of producing nuclear weapons. Pyongyang also expressed its willingness to prove through verification with the US that it has no nuclear weapons if Washington abandons its anti-DPRK policy.

In response to the DPRK's withdrawal from the NPT, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Friday that Washington would not enter into dialogue with Pyongyang if the DPRK does not comply with Washington's demand to dismantle its nuclear program.

The DPRK joined the NPT in Dec. 1985. Pyongyang withdrew from the treaty in March 1993 but returned to the pact in Oct. 1994 under the Agreed Framework reached by the United States and the DPRK in Geneva.
