Japan, South Korea Agree on Trilateral Work on DPRK

Senior Japanese and South Korean officials agreed Saturday that the two countries and the United States should work together to bring the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) nuclear program issue to a peaceful resolution, Japan's Kyodo News reported.

Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Yukio Takeuchi reached the consensus with Yim Sung Joon, South Korean President Kim Dae Jung's envoy, Kyodo reported.

They also reaffirmed the need for a coolheaded response in connection with a possible referral of the case to the UN SecurityCouncil (UNSC).

The two shared the view that sanctions on the DPRK by the Security Council following a referral by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) could do more harm than good, the report said.

They agreed that Japan and South Korea should use their respective channels to call on the DPRK to engage in dialogue.

The two countries should also work in concert with China, Russia and the IAEA over the issue.

The DPRK declared on Friday its withdrawal from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but said it had no intention to produce nuclear weapons.

The DPRK said that the withdrawal was effective from Saturday.

Pyongyang had hinted late December last year that it would dropout of the pact, which it joined in December 1985.
