The Chinese government will take strict measures to regulate prices so as to create a sound environment for economic development, said a senior government official on Saturday.

Price regulating departments at all levels should act decisively to investigate and deal with price violations concerning water and electricity services in rural areas, housing construction by farmers and farm machinery repairs so as to reduce the financial burden on farmers and promote rural economic growth, Wang Yang, vice-minister in Charge of the State Development Planning Commission, told a national price supervision and inspection conference in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province.

Efforts should also be made to deal with overpricing on commodities and services in cases concerning departments which have no statutory powers to set prices, Wang noted.

The State Development Planning Commission would directly investigate price violations relating to education, urban water supply and charges for migrant workers, and would deal with the cases accordingly, said Wang.

He also called on local price regulating departments to closely monitor fees charged for power supply, employment and re-employment, real estate services, medical services, medicines and environmental protection, among others.
