Chinese Teenager Surprises Himself with Men's Pursuit Victory

Teenager Sui Baoku from Jiamusi surprised himself on Sunday with a gold medal in the short track speed skating men's pursuit at the 10th Chinese National Winter Games in Harbin.

Chinese Teenager Surprises Himself with Men's Pursuit Victory

Teenager Sui Baoku from Jiamusi surprised himself on Sunday with a gold medal in the short track speed skating men's pursuit at the 10th Chinese National Winter Games in Harbin.

The 18-year-old Sui clocked one minute and 6.112 seconds in the7-lap competition for his first national victory, upsetting a strong squad including Olympic silver medalist Li Jiajun.

"I have to admit it's a surprise for me," said Sui, who started to have skating training at the age of nine.

"I am very happy with the win, because my mom was watching me from the stand."

Guo Wei and Li Ye, both from Changchun, took home the silver and bronze respectively while Li, the men's 1,500m runner-up at the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in 2002, finished a disappointing fourth.

Earlier on Sunday, Olympic champion Yang Yang won the women's pursuit.
