South Korean President-elect Roh Moo-hyun on Monday reiterated that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) nuclear issue should be resolved in a peaceful way.

In a meeting with visiting US Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly, Roh said South Korea will play a "leading role" in solving the DPRK nuclear crisis, the national news agency Yonhap News reported.

The DPRK declared its pullout from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) last Friday after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution requesting the DPRK to readmit the monitoring cameras and close its nuclear facilities.

Under such a situation, the South Korean government repeated its stance that the issue must be dealt with through dialogue between the DPRK and the United States.

Moreover, Roh, who will take office in late February, told Kelly that he has no intention of making changes to the South Korea-US alliance, stressing his belief that the nuclear issue must be resolved in close cooperation with the United States, said Yonhap.

Chyung Dai-chul, who was recently named as Roh's special envoy to the United States on the DPRK issue, also attended the meeting.

Kelly was scheduled to meet with South Korean Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Chi Sung-hong, Presidential Adviser Lim Dong-won and Senior Presidential Secretary Yim Sung-joon later in the day, said Yonhap.

Meanwhile, another mediator for the DPRK issue -- former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, who serves as special envoy of the Japanese prime minister, will meet incumbent President Kim Dae-jung and Roh on Monday afternoon.
