The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said Monday that it is determined to build a new bridge linking the Pearl River Delta area in anticipation of increasingly close economic integration with the two places.

Sarah Liao, HKSAR secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works said she does not see any insolvable difficulty in relation to the discussion between the HKSAR government and the State Development Planning Commission of the central government on the proposed bridge.

Liao made the remarks during a press conference to announce herdetailed policy objectives after HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa delivered his policy address last week to lay down an new economic blueprint for Hong Kong's economic development.

She said her transport and works policy was fleshed out in accordance with the spirit of the policy address delivered by TungChee Hwa last week, which stressed the need for capitalizing on Hong Kong's advantages to revitalize its economy.

"In response to Mr. Tung's latest policy address, we are researching and liaising closely with the various authorities in Guangdong Province and the mainland in general in the hope that the bridge will be constructed as soon as possible.

"This bridge will be vital for HKSAR's smooth flow of passengers and its tourism industry. It is also an infrastructure that will be vital for both the HKSAR and the mainland's future economic development in general," Liao said.

Liao said the building of the bridge is part and parcel of the Closer Economic Partnership Agreement reached between the HKSAR and the mainland.

Both the HKSAR Environment, Transport and Works Bureau and the (SDPC) are actively engaged in in-depth research to project the future demand for the services afforded by the proposed bridge.

Meanwhile, the HKSAR government is also set to hold discussionson the geographical distribution of the rail stations of a proposed high-speed rail link joining Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

In the next five years, the HKSAR government will spend 290 billion (37 billion US dollars) Hong Kong dollars annually due to its prompt infrastructure needs.
