Guangdong's 2002 GDP Growth Projected at 10.8 Percent

The gross domestic product (GDP)of Guangdong Province for 2002 was projected to hit 1,164.7 billion yuan (141 billion US dollars), up 10.8 percent from the previous year, Governor Lu Ruihua said Monday.

The gross domestic product (GDP)of Guangdong Province for 2002 was projected to hit 1,164.7 billion yuan (141 billion US dollars), up 10.8 percent from the previous year, Governor Lu Ruihua said Monday.

Under the projection, the annual GDP growth rate for the last five years since 1998 would average 10.2 percent, Lu said in a government work report at the first session of the 10th provincialPeople's Congress which opened here Monday.

In 2002, the south China coastal province's foreign trade reached a record 221.11 billion US dollars, up 25.3 percent year on year. Of the total, exports rose 24.3 percent to 118.47 billionUS dollars, with the average annual growth rate standing at 9.7 percent in the last five years.

Guangdong also attracted over 13.11 billion US dollars in foreign direct investment in 2002, jumping by 26.6 percent from the previous year.

In the next five years, Lu said, Guangdong would work hard to increase its GDP by 9 percent annually and build a relatively complete market economy system.

Many people from all strata of society have registered and beenapproved to sit in on the session, as well as officials from foreign consulates in Guangzhou.

Deputies to the nine-day session will discuss the government work report and elect members of the Standing Committee of the 10th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, the governor, vice governors, heads of the province's Higher People's Court and People's Procuratorate.

They will also elect the province's deputies to the 10th National People's Congress next spring.
