Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said here Monday that cooperation between Russian regions and Chinese partners is becoming an indispensable component of the Russian-Chinese relations.

"A fairly good system of coordination of inter-regional and cross-border cooperation between Russian and Chinese partners, both on the central and the local levels, has recently emerged," the diplomat said.

Trade and economic relations between the northwestern provinces of China and 10 regions of the Russian Far Eastern Federal District are developing especially actively, Yakovenko emphasized.

Yakovenko also said there is an idea of creating an association of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) regions, which could become a business partner of the already-existing Association of European Regions.

"Creating a network of interaction between European regions, Russian regions and CIS regions, we could expand the borders of cooperation with the European Union to the entire territory of the CIS," the diplomat said.
