China, Barbados Pledge to Promote Bilateral Ties

Barbados Prime Minister Owen Arthurmet on Monday with visiting Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi, and both expressed their governments' desire to promote friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Barbados Prime Minister Owen Arthurmet on Monday with visiting Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi, and both expressed their governments' desire to promote friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.

At their talks, Wu expressed her appreciation for the one-China policy pursued by Bridgetown. She also thanked the Barbadian government for its support for China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Shanghai's 2010 World Expo bid.

Wu said China attaches great importance to developing friendly and cooperative relations with all the Caribbean countries including Barbados.

Wu also said the Chinese government is ready to work together with the Barbadian government to open up new avenues and seek new areas for expanding bilateral ties, and promote exchanges and cooperation between enterprises of the two countries.

Arthur said the relationship between Barbados and China is a special one and that his government also attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with China.

Arthur also briefed Wu about his ideas of promoting regional integration in the Caribbean and about the planned Single Market to be in place in the region in 2004, a program aimed at creating an economic bloc capable of meeting challenges posed by globalization.

The Barbadian government will adhere to its one-China policy, he said.

Prior to the talks, the two sides signed an exchange of notes on China providing free assistance to Barbados.

Wu arrived in Bridgetown, capital of Barbados, Saturday night at the invitation of the Barbadian government for a three-day visit.
