US, Russian Officials to Meet on Anti-terrorism in Moscow

Senior officials from the United States and Russia are expected to meet in Moscow next week to discuss cooperation in fighting terrorism, the US State Department said Tuesday.

Senior officials from the United States and Russia are expected to meet in Moscow next week to discuss cooperation in fighting terrorism, the US State Department said Tuesday.

The meeting of the US-Russia Joint Working Group on Counterterrorism will be held on Jan. 23 to deal with issues ranging from Afghanistan, Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Middle East to terrorism related with weapons of mass destruction,State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters.

The US delegation will be headed by Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage while the Russian side will be led by Deputy Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Trubnikov, Boucher said.

The US-Russia Joint Working Group on Counterterrorism was formerly known as the US-Russia Working Group on Afghanistan. In their summit in Moscow last May, US President George W. Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed to give the body a broader mandate.
