The South Korean government said Wednesday it has canceled a meeting between President Kim Dae Jung and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi scheduled for later in the day.

The cancellation is seen as South Korea's expression of displeasure at Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visit the previous day to Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, where war criminals are enshrined along with Japan's war dead.

South Korea and China strongly oppose visits by Japanese premiers to the controversial shrine.
