The European Commission (EC), the executive arm of the European Union (EU), approved two separate aid programs Wednesday to Bangladesh and Pakistan for the next three years.

A total of 411.5 million euros (about 413 million US dollars) will be given to Bangladesh, focusing on basic health, education, food security and rural development.

With an annual per capita gross domestic product of only 200 dollars, Bangladesh is one of the poorest Asian countries. The EU's total aid effort has amounted to 1.5 billion euros (about 1.6 billion dollars) since 1976.

The EC also approved 71 million euros (about 72 million US dollars) for Pakistan's human development and trade development.
