Pakistan's first communication satellite will be operational from Feb. 1, according to a report of the Associated Press of Pakistan(APP) in Islamabad on Wednesday.

The first phase of functionality test has already been conducted successfully and after holding some other tests, the satellite will start operation, the report quoted an official source of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications as saying.

The source said the Paksat-1 satellite will be used for transmission of new TV channels.

The ministry in August last year signed an agreement with Hughes Global Satellite System, the US-based satellite positioninggiant, to position Pakistan's satellite, added the APP.

The country's Federal Cabinet approved the acquisition of Hughes Global Systems Satellite (HGS3) as the Paksat-1 satellite, on lease for five years at the cost of approximately 9.1 million US dollars.
