South Korean President-elect Roh Moo Hyun told visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi on Thursday that Japan and South Korea should settle problems, including DPRK nuclear development and the controversy over Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visit to Yasukuni Shrine, through talks.

Kawaguchi is hoping that Japan and South Korea, under Roh's leadership, will also work towards building future-oriented cooperative ties, Japanese officials said.

The foreign minister also intends to work out details about the possible attendance of Koizumi at Roh's inauguration on Feb. 25, they said.

Koizumi's visit to Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo on Tuesday has cast a cloud over Kawaguchi's trip.

South Korean President Kim Dae Jung canceled a scheduled meeting with Kawaguchi on Wednesday, shortly before she left Tokyo for Seoul.
