Antigua and Barbuda PM Meets Chinese State Councilor

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Lester Bird held talks with visiting Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi on Thursday in St. John's, capital of the Caribbean country.

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Lester Bird held talks with visiting Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi on Thursday in St. John's, capital of the Caribbean country.

During the meeting, Wu and Bird exchanged views on bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as international and regional issues of mutual concern.

Wu said this year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and China is satisfied with the smooth development of relations between the two nations.

She also said the Chinese government is willing to further develop the comprehensive cooperative relationship with Antigua and Barbuda and other Caribbean countries on the basis of the FivePrinciples of Peaceful Coexistence, and to meet the challenges brought about by economic globalization.

Wu appreciated the one-China policy which the government of Antigua and Barbuda has always adhered to, and its support for China's bid for the Shanghai 2010 World Expo.

On his part, Bird, who is also the foreign minister, spoke highly of the development of bilateral relationship between the two countries, stressing that China is a close friend of Antigua and Barbuda.

The prime minister noted that China, which pursues a foreign policy of peace, plays an important role in maintaining world peace and stability. He added that Antigua and Barbuda attaches importance to its relations with China, and that his government's one-China policy will never change.

After the talks, the two sides signed an agreement on economic and technological cooperation.

Wu arrived in St. John's on Wednesday for a three-day official visit to Antigua and Barbuda.
