One Israeli was killed and several others were moderately wounded in a shooting attack on Friday evening in the divided West Bank city of Hebron, Israeli Radio reported.

Israeli military source and local witnesses confirmed that two Palestinian gunmen had approached a solitary home near the Givat Harsina settlement, where a tiny enclave of Jewish settlers lives, opened fire at several settlers and soldiers, killing one and wounding four others.

Someone inside the house into the settlement shot back and killed one of the gunmen and the other escaped. Big Israeli army forces conducted searches in the area for the escaped militant.

Ambulances rushed to the area and evacuated the injured Israelis from the area, the radio said, adding that some of them were treated in the spot and others were taken to Israeli hospitals.

A local television station reported that Izel Dein Al Qassam, the armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) claimed responsibility for the armed attack.

Hebron, which has since 1997 been divided into a Palestinian part and an Israeli part, has witnessed an escalation of military actions by both sides over the last few weeks.

Palestinian militants killed 13 Israelis more than two months ago, most of them were soldiers in the town. In another case, two militants raided a settlement and shot dead six Israelis into a dinning room.

Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad (Holy War) had claimed responsibility for the two attacks, in which four Palestinian militants were also killed. Their houses in town were destroyed by the Israeli army.
