A three-day international Seminar on Xuanzang and the Silk Route opened here on Friday with the participation of over 100 scholars and professionals from eight countries.

The seminar was organized jointly by Indra Gandhi National Center for Arts and Department of Culture under the Indian government with one of the purposes to find ways and means to develop the Xuanzang Memorial Hall in India.

Xuanzang, a Buddha disciple who came to India in AD 630, belongs to the galaxy of world citizens whose great mission was to interpret, for the good of mankind, sublime values of human civilization.

From AD 630 to AD 644, the noted Chinese traveler and Buddhist pilgrim spent nearly 14 years visiting Buddhist temples and monasteries, cities and places of interest in the Indian sub-continent.

A keen observer of men and affairs, Xuanzang left behind a fascinating and authentic account of India's history, geography, economy and society of the times when northern India was ruled by King Harsha (AD 606-647).

He returned to China after 14 years with 675 volumes of sacred texts of Buddha's teachings and spent his final years translating the interpreting.

The seminar will discuss, among others, Xuanzang's education and religious zeal, his journey to the Buddhist Holy Land, Buddhism and Buddhist art along the Silk Route travelled by him and others with special reference to Xinjiang and Dunhuang in China and neighboring Afghanistan.

Over 100 scholars and professionals from China, Japan, Afghanistan, Belgium, Pakistan, German, the United States and Indian participated in the seminar, which will be ended on Sunday.
