Botswana President Festus Mogae said Saturday in Gaborone that China is not only a true friend of Africa but also an important force to advance the peace and development in the world.

While meeting visiting Chinese Foreign Minster Tang Jiaxuan at the Presidential Palace, Mogae spoke highly of the mechanism of Sino-African cooperative forum advocated by China in a bid to promote relations between China and African countries and China's active contribution to the advancement of the South-South cooperation.

The president also expressed his hope that Botswana is willing to strengthen its consultation with China and promote the bilateral cooperation so as to bring about a further development of the relations between the two countries.

Arriving on Friday, Tang Jiaxuan paid the two-day visit to Botswana at the invitation of his Botswana counterpart Mompati Merafhe. He said that the peoples of China and Botswana enjoy longfriendship and the bilateral relationship has withstood test of the changing international situation.

To further the bilateral relations, he put forward three proposals: to continue promoting high-level visits between the two countries, to strengthen consultation and cooperation on regional and international affairs, and to broaden economic and trade cooperation.

He assured Mogae that China will make concerted efforts with Botswana and all African countries to enhance the mechanism of Sino-African cooperative forum and will hold the second ministerial meeting at the end of this year.

Tang also spoke highly of Botswana's political stability, economic development and friendly foreign policy toward neighboring countries.

During his visit, Tang and Merafhe signed an agreement on economic and technological cooperation between the two countries.

China and Botswana established diplomatic relations on Jan. 6, 1975.
