'China's No.1 Village' Purchases Light Aircraft

Huaxi Village in east China's Jiangsu Province, known as "China's No. 1 village" for its prosperous rural industry, has purchased two light aircraft.

Huaxi Village in east China's Jiangsu Province, known as "China's No. 1 village" for its prosperous rural industry, has purchased two light aircraft.

Wu Xieping, general manager of the local travel agency, said the village intends to purchase eight more light planes to advance the development of local tourism and to use in pilot training.

According to Wu, a new hangar covering an area of nearly 10,000 square meters is nearly completed, and an additional eight planes are expected to arrive soon.

As an affluent village, by the early 1990s, every family owned at least one car.

The village reported a gross annual industrial and agriculturaloutput value of over 6 billion yuan (about 723 million US dollars)last year, and per capita annual net income reached 6,000 US dollars.

In 2002, the village received more than 1.2 million visitors from both home and abroad.
