The ninth Channel V Chinese Music Awards were given out in the Shanghai Grand Theatre on Sunday night.

The event, the biggest ever, was hosted jointly by Channel V, China Central Television and Shanghai Media Group. It will be broadcast by satellite to 53 nations or regions in Asia, reaching a combined audience of over 500 million.

Thirty-four trophies were awarded. Sun Nan of the Chinese mainland and Richie Ren (Hsien-Chi) of Taiwan won the Most Popular Male Artist Awards. The Most Popular Female Artist Awards went to the mainland's Han Hong and Singapore's Stefanie Sun.

For the singer awards, votes by the theatre audience and fans make up 60 per cent of the deciding factors. The opinions of the 10 judges from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan made up the remaining 40 per cent.

The awards for the 10 most popular songs were given solely on the basis of votes by the audience and fans.

The choice of winners was not released until last night's ceremony.

More than 5 million people sent in votes by text message, fax, letter and e-mail.

More than 50 of China's most popular entertainers appeared in the three-hour show.

The presenters included actor Tony Leung, who stars in the mainland's most popular movie, "Hero."

The British band Suede and Japanese singer Ayumi Hamasaki were invited to present the Best Group Award and they also performed.

It was the first time Suede had performed on the Chinese mainland. Following this debut, they will play two gigs in Beijing next month to wrap up their Asian tour.

Before the awards, various singers promoted themselves at university campus roadshows in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, hoping to get more votes.

The media have raised doubts about how singers and songs are nominated and the overall system of voting. Ke Lan, a presenter at the awards ceremony, said: "Only singers who have had a new album released in the past year can be nominated."
