The Tibet Autonomous Region has led western China in economic growth for two consecutive years.

The region reported a 12.8-percent rise in terms of economic development in 2001, the highest in western China. Its gross domestic product totaled 15.6 billion yuan (1.8 billion US dollars) last year, up 12.4 percent over the previous year, again topping all other western regions.

The regional statistical bureau attributed the sustainable economic growth to the increase in investment in fixed assets and the construction of key projects in Tibet over the past couple of years.

With economic aid from the central government and other parts of China, Tibet invested 10.5 billion yuan (1.2 billion US dollars) in fixed assets in 2002, up by 26.8 percent over the previous year.

The central government decided at the fourth Tibet work conference to build 117 key projects at a total cost of 31.2 billion yuan (3.7 billion US dollars). Up to now, 34 projects have been completed with a combined investment of 7.8 billion yuan.

The industrial added value of Tibet topped 1.16 billion yuan (139 million US dollars) last year, an increase of 6.5 percent compared with the previous year. By readjusting industrial structure, the added value of the region's service trade surged 15.2 percent to reach 8 billion yuan in 2002.

The per capita annual net income of local farmers and herdsmen averaged 1,525 yuan last year, up by 9 percent.

Tibet played host to 850,000 domestic and foreign visitors last year, gaining 970 million yuan (116 million US dollars) in tourist revenue, a rise of 29 percent on a year-on-year basis.
