The sales volume of Chinese electronic information manufacturers totaled 1.4 trillion yuan (about 169.29 US dollars) last year, making China the third largest electronic information producer in the world.

The electronic information industry has become the number one pillar industry of the country, witnessing an average annual increase of 25.2 percent over the past five years, according to Wu Jichuan, minister of information industry in his address to a national conference on the information industry which opened Monday.

Wu said the electronic and information sector has ranked top among all industrial sectors of the country in terms of absorbing foreign investment and volume of exports.

Since China adopted the policy of reform and opening itself to the outside world, the electronic information sector has absorbed foreign investment value of 70 billion US dollars, and the number of related joint ventures reached over 10,000, accounting for 15 percent of the country's total joint ventures.

The influx of foreign investment has become a vital power driving up China's electronic information sector, the minister said, adding that the exports of electronic information products have recorded a sharp increase in recent years.

Statistics show that the exports of electronic information products hit 92.5 billion US dollars last year, up 42 percent over the previous year, ranking top among all industrial sectors of the country.

China has become world's biggest manufacturer of program-controlled switches and the number of color TV sets it exported last year amounted to 18 million.

Computers and telecommunications products have become the leading power in the sector, Wu said, adding that the software and IC (integrated circuit) industry has witnessed rapid growth and Chinese-language computer operating systems and application software have reached the world advanced level.

According to the Ministry of Information Industry, the business volume of the software industry hit 110 billion yuan (about 13.3 billion US dollars) last year, the IC production has increased from 1.3 billion chips in 1997 to 8.5 billion chips last year.

In recent years, China's information industry has grown rapidly. China has the world's biggest number of telephone users and the world's second largest number of Internet surfers.
