The death toll on Italian roads last weekend jumped to 57, a sharp increase from the 33 victims recorded, police said in Rome on Monday.

According to police, between Jan. 17 and 19 there were a total of 1,791 accidents, with 1,245 injuries, as opposed to 1,320 accidents between Jan. 10 and 12 when 916 people were injured.

The number of fatal accidents in the past week rose to 48, compared to 30 a week before, and 35.4 percent appear to have beencaused by the driver losing control of the vehicle.

Police believe that the past weekend's increase in accident wasmostly caused by fog arising in a high pressure system over most of the peninsula.
