An avalanche swept down on a group of American skiers in eastern British Columbia Monday, killing seven of them, officials said.
Thirteen others were rescued from the avalanche near the Durand Glacier, outside of Revelstoke, said Bob Pearce, a spokesman for the B.C. Ambulance Service.
The party of 20 American skiers had chartered a helicopter to take them to the remote backcountry, Pearce said.
Seven skiers were confirmed dead and 13 were located after a search-and-rescue effort and were being transported to a hospital. At least one was in stable condition but Pearce said the status of the other victims was not known.
Canadian Helicopters Ltd. in Revelstoke said it received a call to fly a team of paramedics to the avalanche site. Initially it was told to prepare to bring back between one and four victims.
There was no immediate word on where the Americans were from.
