Sixty-one percent of the French people approve their President Jacques Chirac's attitude on the Iraqi crisis, according to the results of a survey released on Tuesday.

Forty-seven of the interviewed said France should remain neutral if the United States intervenes militarily against Iraq, according to the survey conducted by BVA polling institute for French magazine Paris Match.

Twenty-four percent said France should oppose the United Statespolitically while 13 percent wanted France to support the United States politically, 11 percent said France should join military operations against Iraq.

Believing that war is the worst solution to the Iraqi crisis, Chirac has always rejected mounting US pressure for military actions on Iraq though he does not rule out joining military operations with a United Nations mandate.

In an interview published in French daily Le Figaro on Monday, Chirac said: "Clearly, if the United States decides to intervene alone, we will be obliged to say that it is on the margin of the international community."
