A senior official from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Tuesday evening urged Seoul to make joint efforts with Pyongyang to achieve "independent reunification of the Korean Peninsula."

Kim Ryong Song, chief of the DPRK delegation to the 9th Inter-Korean Ministerial Meeting to be held this week in Seoul, made thestatement in a speech at a banquet hosted by the South Korean delegation at the Sheraton Walker Hill Hotel in eastern Seoul, according to South Korea's national news agency Yonhap News.

Kim, who serves as Chief Cabinet Councilor of the DPRK government and also headed the DPRK delegation to the previous tworounds of ministerial talks, stressed the importance of the unity of the Korean people as the United States lays pressure on the DPRK.

In his speech at the banquet given in honor of the five-member DPRK delegation, South Korean Prime Minister Kim Suk-soo expressedhope that "the inter-Korean minister-level talks will serve as a meaningful clue to a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue."

The DPRK's declaration of withdrawal from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty earlier this month aroused serious concerns in South Korea and Seoul wants to use the meeting as a chance to discuss the issue with the DPRK.

The DPRK delegation arrived here via Beijing on Tuesday afternoon. The first-round plenary session of the meeting will be held on Wednesday morning, and the whole talks are scheduled to end Friday.

Meanwhile, outgoing South Korean President Kim Dae-jung on Tuesday expressed confidence that South Korea and its allies will find a peaceful solution to the DPRK nuclear issue.
