At least 19 people were reportedly killed in a strong earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, which rocked Mexico's western state of Colima Tuesday evening, local authorities said.

The earthquake occurred around 8:11 p.m. local time (0211 GMT Wednesday) and lasted one minute.

The earthquake, which was strongly felt in Mexico City, knockedout power to many areas and terrified panic residents out of theirhomes and buildings.

The quake also cut communication in some areas and brought the international airport in Mexico City to a standstill.

Mexico's national civil defense chief Carman Segura told the press that there were no early reports of damage from Colima, or the neighboring state of Jalisco.

A strong offshore earthquake affected Mexico City on Sept. 19 1984, killing 7,000 people, injuring 11,000 and leaving 300,000 others homeless. The damage stood at 1.1 billion US dollars.
