New Commander of PLA Garrison in HK Appointed

Major General Wang Jitang, commander of the Yunnan Provincial Military Area Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), has been appointed as commander of the PLA Garrison in Hong Kong to succeed Lieutenant General Xiong Ziren, according to an order of the Central MilitaryCommission (CMC) made public Thursday.

Major General Wang Jitang, commander of the Yunnan Provincial Military Area Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), has been appointed as commander of the PLA Garrison in Hong Kong to succeed Lieutenant General Xiong Ziren, according to an order of the Central MilitaryCommission (CMC) made public Thursday.

The order signed by Jiang Zemin, chairman of the CMC, said Lieutenant General Xiong Ziren, commander of the PLA Garrison in Hong Kong, has been appointed as deputy political commissar of thePLA Nanjing Military Area Command. The order also contained the appointment of Wang Jitang.

With the approval of the CMC, General Liu Shutian, political commissar of the PLA Guangzhou Military Area Command, made a special trip to Hong Kong to make the announcement Thursday.

Liu Shutian, Xiong Ziren, Wang Jitang and Political Commissar of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison Wang Yufa met with Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government Thursday.

During the meeting, Liu briefed Tung on the new appointment andthanked the HKSAR government's long-time support to the PLA Garrison in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, through a spokesman for the PLA Garrison in Hong Kong Lieutenant General Xiong Ziren expressed his thanks to the HKSAR government's support to his work in Hong Kong and Hong Kong people's concern for the members of the PLA Garrison.

Also, Major General Wang Jitang said that the PLA Garrison in Hong Kong would continue to carry out its duties under the Basic Law and the Garrison Law and contribute more to the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong.
