Three Israelis were killed on Thursday night in a Palestinian shooting attack at Beit Haggai junction, south to the West Bank city of Hebron, Israel TV reported.

The three were critically injured from the Palestinian ambush and later died of their wounds, the report said.

The Israeli security forces have been searching for the gunmen, who reportedly fled to a nearby Palestinian village.

The Islamic Resistance Movement, or Hamas, has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the Ha'aretz online news service.

During the 27-month-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, the West Bank city has been in the violent standoff between radical Palestinian gunmen and far-right Jewish settlers.

The tension in the city has been high, especially since Nov. 26,2002, when 12 Israeli soldiers were killed in a Palestinian ambush.

Israel captured the city during the 1967 six-day war, but later returned 80 percent to the Palestinians under an agreement singed by the Israeli government and the Palestinian National Authority in1997.

About 450 Jewish settlers, mostly extremists, live in three settlements in downtown Hebron among more than 100,000 Palestinians, namely to guard the Cave of Machpelah, which is considered as one of the holiest places for the Jewish people.
