Construction on China's first major communications and information base began Wednesday in Xi'an, the capital of northwestern China's Shaanxi Province.

The West China Communications Industry Base, located in the Xi'an High and New Technology Development Zone, will cover 147 hectares and cost more than 1 billion US dollars. The project is expected to be completed by late 2008.

The base will house a commercial area for international meetings, a communications industry area and living quarters for staff, according to an official with the development zone.

The base is expected to become a leading international communications conference and exhibition center, said the official.

The base will be built by the Xi'an High and New Technology Development Zone and the Huaxia Construction Company.
