Two people were trampled to death and 14 injured in a stampede at the opening of a new supermarket in northern China, police and hospital officials said Thursday.

China Broadcasting said more than 10,000 people rushed the doors of the Hualian supermarket in Baoyou city, Inner Mongolia for the big bargains on offer last Friday.

Local police and hospital officials said several dozen people were trampled in the melee. Two were killed and 14 injured, two seriously.

Supermarkets at this time of year are often jam-packed as Chinese New Year shoppers strip shelves bare in preparation for the week-long Spring Festival holiday that officially starts on February 1.
