Italy and China Friday promised to strengthen cooperation in all fields. The promise came during a meeting in Rome between Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan.

During the talks, Tang said that Sino-Italian relations have maintained a positive momentum in their development over the past years, and that strengthening of the friendly cooperation between the two sides is not only a common desire, but also serves the fundamental interests of the two peoples.

He stressed that China will adhere to an independent foreign policy of peace, and is willing to further improve and develop relations with developed countries, including Italy.

For his part, Berlusconi spoke highly of China's policy of sticking to the reforms and establishing and improving the market economy system. He also expressed his appreciation of China's achievements made in economic development.

Berlusconi hoped that the exchange of high-level visits between the two countries will continue so as to push forward bilateral cooperation in all fields. Italy is willing to work with China to push for the development of the comprehensive Europe-China partnership when it holds the rotating EU presidency in the second half of this year.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the Iraq crisis and the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Tang expressed his appreciation for Italy's respect for the authority of the United Nations and its effort to avoid war in the Gulf region.

Berlusconi praised China's active role in seeking solutions to both issues, adding that he is ready to keep close contact and cooperation with China in this regard.
