Israel to Deploy 1,500 Soldiers to Reinforce Police Ahead Election

Israeli police forces will be buffered with some 1,500 Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and a complete closure will be imposed on all Palestinian areas, Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said at Sunday's weekly government meeting.

Israeli police forces will be buffered with some 1,500 Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and a complete closure will be imposed on all Palestinian areas, Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said at Sunday's weekly government meeting.

"We are in the midst of terror attacks ahead of Tuesday's Knesset (parliament) elections," Mofaz said.

The defense minister pointed out that the number of "terror" attack warnings for election day was very high.

He said the closure on the Palestinian territories would go intoeffect Sunday afternoon in order to prevent Palestinians from entering Israel.

Mofaz also said efforts have been accelerated in recent days to distribute IDF weapons to citizens living along the seam line and in the territories ahead of the elections.

He said the army had carried out meaningful operations in the West Bank city of Hebron.
