Israeli Troops Kill 11 Palestinians, Wound 45 in Gaza City

At least 11 Palestinians were shot dead early Sunday and 45 injured during Israel's tough and wide military operation in Gaza City's southern neighborhood of Zaytoon.

At least 11 Palestinians were shot dead early Sunday and 45 injured during Israel's tough and wide military operation in Gaza City's southern neighborhood of Zaytoon.

Medical sources at the Shiffa hospital in the city said all of the 11 dead and the 45 wounded were shot by heavy life ammunition fired from tanks and helicopters, and most of them were civilians.

Dozens of tanks, armored vehicles and bulldozers supported by attack helicopters stormed the neighborhood and operated in the most tensed and over-populated area in the Gaza Strip.

The army blew up three houses in the neighborhood that belong to families of Palestinian members of the Palestinians Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), who had been killed by Israeli army while they carried out attacks against Israel.

The army also blew up at least 20 industrial establishments, garages and metal workshops in the neighborhood, saying these places were used in manufacturing homemade rockets and bombs.

Palestinian witnesses said the army destroyed two factories, adding that the shells fired from tanks had also burned most of thelittle stores in a main public market in the city's downtown.

The Israeli army's operation in the poor overcrowded neighborhood was confronted by Palestinian armed resistance. The Palestinian militants used light machine guns, grenades and roadside bombs to attack the Israel's army.

Palestinian armed groups said their men had destroyed two Israeli army tanks, and witnesses also said they saw Israeli army ambulances carrying wounded soldiers.

The Israeli army's escalation in the Gaza Strip came hours after statements made by Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, who said the Israeli army would carry out widespread operations in the Gaza Strip.

He said such operations were a tough Israel's response to rockets and mortars attacks launched by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip.

On Friday Hamas militants fired four rockets that landed into Israel, causing no injuries.
