A car bomb exploded in Colombia's northeastern state of Arauca on Sunday, killing at least six soldiers and one civilian and injuring nine other soldiers, the military said.

The car bomb was set off at about 2 p.m. in the afternoon (1900GMT) when an army patrol was passing a house in the town of Tame, Arauquita City, army officials said.

Four car bombs have exploded in Arauca this month. The first three bombings, believed to be carried out by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Colombia's biggest anti-government guerrilla group, killed five people and wounded more than 10 others.

There are several rebel groups operating in Arauca, one of the most violent areas in Colombia.

When President Alvaro Uribe took office last August, he declared special security zones in Arauca, sent more government troops there and appointed a hard-liner as governor, in his efforts to bring security to the province.
