Russia sees no need for new resolutions of the United Nations Security Council on Iraq, but calls for continuation of the UN weapons inspection in the country, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said on Monday.

He said that the reports to be presented to the Security Council on Monday by heads of international inspection mission, Hans Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei, "will be intermediate documents."

"Any additional decisions for continuation of the activity of the inspectors are not needed," Yakovenko said.

He stressed that the UN inspectors should continue their work in Iraq.

"It is the inspectors, and they alone, who could answer the question whether Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction. This is why we believe the inspectors should continue their work in Iraq," Yakovenko said.

Last Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder stressed their "similar approach" to the Iraqi crisis, saying only diplomacy could end the standoff.
