Indonesia's Leading Airliner to Increase Flights to China

The State-run airliner Garuda Indonesia plans to increase flights to Shanghai and Guangzhou in summer of this year, a local economic daily reported Tuesday.

The State-run airliner Garuda Indonesia plans to increase flights to Shanghai and Guangzhou in summer of this year, a local economic daily reported Tuesday.

"The flights from Jakarta to Guangzhou will be increased from three times a week to four times a week, and from Jakarta to Shanghai from two times a week to three times," Garuda's director Indra Setiawan was quoted by Bisnis Indonesia newspaper as saying.

China, with its strong economic growth and huge population, provided a rapidly growing market for air transport industry, he said.

Garuda has opened the Shanghai route since Nov. 11, 2002. The route, the third Chinese route after Hong Kong and Guangzhou, is served by a 293-seat A-330.

Indra said the Shanghai route would help Garuda expand market access in other cities in China, such as Beijing and Xiamen.
