Initial results show that the Likud party led by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has won the general elections for the 16th Knesset (parliament), Israeli televisions reported Tuesday night.

Likud would win 34-36 seats in the 120-member Knesset and become the biggest parliamentary party.

The Labor party, Likud's major rival for the elections, would get 17-19 Knesset seats, to be followed by the secular Shinui Party's 14-17 seats and the religious Shas Party's 10-13 seats.

The far-right National Union is expected to acquire eight seats, while the far-left Meretz would secure six seats, according to the initial results.

On Feb. 5, the Central Elections Committee will announce the official results. On Feb. 17, the newly-elected Knesset will hold its first meeting.

President Moshe Katsav is expected to appoint Sharon as new prime minister within seven days after the results publication, andinstruct him to establish the 30th government in 42 days.

If Sharon fails to form a government within that period, the president may have to appoint a different Knesset member to form a coalition within 28 days, according to the Basic Law.

If the second choice also fails, a group of at least 61 Knesset members could request the president to appoint a third figure to fulfil the task within 14 days.

Should the third choice fail again, the president would then inform the Knesset speaker that there is no possibility of forming a government and early elections would be held in 90 days.
