Kuwait Says Saddam Will Pay High Price for Attacks

Kuwaiti Defense Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah stressed on Tuesday Saddam will pay a high price if it scathes the country's security, sovereignty and territorial sanctity as Baghdad threatens to do.

The minister made the warning in a statement in response to Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz's recent remarks that Baghdad would retaliate if Kuwait opens its border for US troops toinvade Iraq.

Al-Sabah said his country was not surprised at the Aziz's speechmade on Monday, stressing that it reflected real intentions of the Iraqi regime in dealing with its neighbors.

"This is yet another proof that reveals the hostile nature of the Iraqi regime and affirms that Kuwait has taken the correct choice of seeking aid of sisterly and friendly states for maintaining its sovereignty, stability and security," the minister said.

The Kuwaiti armed forces have been on maximum alert to repulse any aggression, Al-Sabah added.

Aziz's statement constitutes "a new impetus for us to take maximum caution and be vigilant of the evil schemes of the Iraqi regime," he noted.

Kuwait and the United States signed a defense pact after the 1991 Gulf War when a US-led alliance drove Iraqi troops out of the emirate after seven-month occupation.

A total of 17,000 US troops have been deployed in Kuwait, with more arriving every week as the US military buildup continues in the Gulf Region.

Kuwait is intensifying preparations for a possible war fallout, although it still holds that a peaceful solution could avert the prospect of a second Gulf war.
