China's Railway Sector Readies for Peak Travel Days

China's railways are preparing to to deal with their greatest number of travelers over the next two days, the Ministry of Railways said Wednesday.

China's railways are preparing to to deal with their greatest number of travelers over the next two days, the Ministry of Railways said Wednesday.

An estimated 3.3 million to 3.4 million journeys will be made by train each day before the traditional Spring Festival, according to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Railways.

Since Jan.17, the first day of China's peak travel season this year, a total of 38.4 million train journeys were made, an averageof 3.2 million per day, up 10.2 percent over last year.

Known as the Spring Travel Season, it concludes on February 25,with the peak travel times occurring immediately before and after Spring Festival.

To ensure most journeys are smooth and safe, the railways have made special efforts to improve ticket services and increase the number of services.

The railways have put on a record 3,816 temporary trains in addition to routine services, 811 more than last year.

China's railway sector also launched a nationwide campaign against ticket scalping and fake tickets.

Since Jan.17, a total of 4,561 illegal ticket dealers have beenarrested and 47 illegal ticket rings have been cracked.

The number of illegal tickets found reached 12,137, with a total value of 2.15 million yuan, including 1,115 tickets worth 210,000 yuan found in Beijing alone, said sources with the public security and traffic administration department of the Ministry of Railways.

Statistics show that the number of journeys during the 40-day peak travel season is expected to reach 1.82 billion, up 3.7 percent over last year, of which an estimated 130 million will be by train, averaging 3.25 million per day.
