Beijing, the Chinese capital, has erected a granite pillar to mark its history of more than 3,000 years.

To mark the completion of the pillar, a ceremony was held Tuesday in the Binhe Park in Xuanwu District, in southern Beijing,at the site of the ancient city of Jicheng where Beijing began.

The foundation of Jicheng was discovered in 1990, and the Xuanwu District Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) andthe district government built a memorial pillar in 1995 to commemmorate the history of this ancient city.

The nine-meter granite pillar inaugurated on Tuesday has replaced the original 1995 pillar, at a cost of 800,000 yuan (96,700 US dollars). Construction of the new pillar began in November last year.

The new pillar was designed to fully display the history of Beijing and was expected to fit its surrounding environment, said Tang Dasheng, secretary of the Xuanwu District Committee of the CPC, citing great changes in modernising the area in recent years.

The Xuanwu district government has planned to renovate more historical sites such as the Niujie Mosque and Changchun Temple this year to highlight Beijing's rich traditional culture, Tang said.
