The United States has decided to designate a Pakistani Islamic group named Lashkar-e-Tayyaba as a foreign terrorist organization, the State Department announced on Thursday.

"Today the secretary of state (Colin Powell) is announcing the designation of a group as a foreign terrorist organization under US law. The group is Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, a Sunni Muslim group located in Pakistan," spokesman Richard Boucher said at a regular briefing.

Boucher accused the group of being responsible for "numerous attacks," including its involvement in the kidnapping and killing of American journalist Daniel Pearl in January 2002.

All persons in the United States or under US jurisdiction are prevented from providing any kind of material support to this group, Boucher said, adding that the group's assets are also blocked.

The spokesman said that the United States will also be moving to the United Nations to include the group on the UN list of terrorist organizations.

He said the designation will bring to 36 the total number of foreign organization on the US State Department terrorist list.
