More Than 500 Aftershocks Reported in Xinjiang Quake-hit Areas

More than 500 aftershocks had jolted Jiashi and Bachu counties in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region by 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, following a massive earthquake that struck the area on Monday morning.

More than 500 aftershocks had jolted Jiashi and Bachu counties in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region by 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, following a massive earthquake that struck the area on Monday morning.

By 5:00 p.m. Monday, 344 tremors had been reported in Bachu County alone, with one measuring 5.1 degrees on the Richter scale, according to the regional seismological bureau.

Nearly 240 people in Bachu county's Qongkurqak village were killed in the quake.

Ma Baozhu, director of the data processing center under the region's seismological remote sensing station, said at least 40 aftershocks were being reported in Jiashi-Bachu area every hour, with 62 aftershocks monitored in one hour alone.

Ma said the tremors were tending to move southeastward.

The 6.8 magnitude quake that rocked Jiashi and Bachu on Monday killed 262 people, according to the latest statistics.

The quake destroyed a total of 8,861 houses and 900 school classrooms in the area.
