The number of United States troops stationed in Germany is likely to be reduced following a possible military operation in Iraq, the Die Welt newspaper quoted sources as saying on Monday.

Sources close to the US military cited global reshuffling of US forces, US plans to transfer its troops to central and eastern Europe and the worsening US-German ties as reasons for a troop reduction plan.

Troops in Heidelberg, where the US Army's European headquartersis located, would see the biggest cut, and only one armored brigade would remain in every US military base in Germany, the newspaper reported.

The plan would not include the US air bases in Ramstein and Frankfurt, it said.

Last month, German Defense Minister Peter Stuck said he was told the United States had no plans to reduce its troops in Germany, but White House spokesman Ari Fleischer hinted several days later that the United States was mulling over plans to restructure its overseas troops.
