A woman inmate at Beijing Municipal Female Prison was released on probation on the eve of the International Women's Day to a reunion with her five-year-old daughter.

Shortly after the woman was jailed several years ago, her husband divorced her. Ting Ting, the inmate's daughter, had to live with her grandmother. But the grandmother underwent surgery in hospital not long ago, leaving the little girl living alone.

"The inmate was released on probation for good behavior and had to take care of her daughter," said a woman officer with the Beijing Municipal No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.

The prison released 18 other inmates and reduced the sentences of about 50 inmates to mark International Women's Day which falls on Saturday, in accordance with relevant laws, the officer said.

In addition, woman prison guards held discussions with other inmates and presented them with shampoo, bathing lotion and towels, encouraging them to have self-respect and self-confidence.

Meanwhile, inmates of the female prison in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region celebrated International Women's Day by staging a performance.

Ma Li, secretary-general of the Xinjiang Charity Federation, encouraged inmates to be responsible for their lives, their families and society and bravely face the past.

The Xinjiang Lawyers' Association promised to provide legal consultation for inmates in a contract signed Friday with the Xinjiang Female Prison.

The prison, the only one for female inmates in Xinjiang, is making efforts to provide a better living environment. It has built a new dining hall and opened a supermarket.
